WALK FOR MALAWI A COMPLETE SUCCESS
WALK FOR MALAWI A COMPLETE SUCCESS
By Audrey Smythe-Wei
Editor-in-Chief
Thursday, January 8, 2009 —
These days, it's difficult to find a Millsberry home that doesn't have a Walk for Malawi poster in the front yard.
Walk
for Malawi proved to be nothing short of a soaring success. Over
100,000 Millsberry citizens participated in the walk to raise $25,000
to help the women and children of Malawi.
The Walk for Malawi
donation of $25,000 in real life was funded by the General Mills
Foundation. The Foundation has decided to donate the money raised to
CARE, an organization that focuses on feeding women and children in
Malawi.
Peter Erickson, a real-life leader at General Mills,
recently returned from a trip to Malawi where work is currently under
way to make use of the generous donation.
"I am very optimistic about our work," said Peter.
"There is clearly a lot we can do, and we now have a better
understanding of how we can have the greatest impact. We saw signs of
spirit, signs of hope," he added.
The
General Mills Foundation is located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It was
created in 1954 to help support community needs and has since awarded
over $400 million to non-profit organizations like CARE.
Peter
met many notable people in Africa. Among them was Jimmy Chikahya, a
Food Scientist who recently graduated from a university in Zambia.
Jimmy plans travel to Minneapolis in February to learn more about food technologies and capabilities.
Meanwhile
in Millsberry, Laslo Balint was equally excited about the real world
good resulting from the efforts made possible by the donation of the
General Mills Foundation.
"I couldn't be happier with the
overwhelming support," said Laslo, "and the women and children of
Malawi are going to benefit greatly from the money raised."
"Because
of all the kind-hearted people out there, many more Malawi children and
women will get more of the proper food and nutrition they need,"
explained Laslo.
The magic of Walk for Malawi's success seemed
to be the nature of the event: kids in Millsberry getting to help real
kids just like them in Malawi.
"Knowing that there were other
kids just like me out there who needed help really made me want to get
involved," said Bobby, owner of Bobby's Bait Shack.
"We're all
in a fortunate position here in Millsberry, so it's great to have the
opportunity to help out a community in need," he added.
Will Wexley, the Cause Tour Bus driver, was understandably thrilled with the overall impact of the walk.
"I've
been able to help a lot of people in a lot of different places,
traveling around in my Cause Tour Bus, so I'm really glad I was able to
get involved with Walk for Malawi here in Millsberry. So many kids in
Malawi will benefit from the funds raised. Having more teachers in
their schools is vital to their education system, and their country as
a whole," commented Will.
"I think it will have a lasting and
immeasurable impact on the Malawi community for quite some time. It's
really only the beginning of more cause-related efforts to come," he
added.

LOOK OUT FOR WINTER FASHION
Thursday, January 8, 2009
— If you haven't noticed yet, the weather has dropped a few degrees.
And you know what that means: Loretta Rivers is busy crafting her
latest winter fashion line-up. We're not sure when she'll be unveiling
her new pieces, but we do know that when they arrive, they're sure to
make some jaws drop. So, keep you're eyes on the snow-covered horizon.
Loretta's winter fashions are heading your way soon.
